Azure IoT Central Azure IoT Operations (enabled by Azure Arc)
Modular, Kubernetes-native industrial edge data plane enabled by Azure Arc with a built-in MQTT broker, OPC UA connectors, and cloud integration with Azure Event Grid and Microsoft Fabric.
Naming timeline
- Azure IoT Central
Managed IoT application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) providing turnkey device provisioning, dashboards, and rules under 'Microsoft.IoTCentral/iotApps'.
- Azure IoT Operations (enabled by Azure Arc)Current name
Azure Arc-enabled edge data plane with Kubernetes-native MQTT brokering, OPC UA asset discovery, and Microsoft Fabric integration.
What replaced Azure IoT Central?
Azure IoT Central has been superseded by Azure IoT Operations (enabled by Azure Arc), with the latest change on 19 November 2024 (General Availability at Microsoft Ignite 2024 (Preview Apr 1, 2024)). Modular, Kubernetes-native industrial edge data plane enabled by Azure Arc with a built-in MQTT broker, OPC UA connectors, and cloud integration with Azure Event Grid and Microsoft Fabric. The underlying legacy API or CLI surface is deprecated, so a technical migration is required.
Also known as
- Azure IoT Operations
- Microsoft SaaS IoT
Technical identifiers
Legacy identifiers deprecated. The underlying API or CLI surface for the legacy name is officially deprecated, so this change requires a technical migration rather than a label update.

The legacy 'Microsoft.IoTCentral/iotApps' ARM resource type and 'azurerm_iotcentral_application' Terraform resource were closed to new deployments on April 1, 2024 and retire on March 31, 2027 in favor of 'Microsoft.IoTOperations' and 'az iot ops'.
Notes & disambiguation
- In April 2024, Microsoft announced that Azure IoT Central ('Microsoft.IoTCentral/iotApps') stopped accepting new application creations starting April 1, 2024 and will be retired on March 31, 2027.
- Industrial edge, asset onboarding, and telemetry processing workloads are directed to Azure IoT Operations enabled by Azure Arc (previewed at Ignite November 2023 and generally available on November 19, 2024 at Microsoft Ignite 2024), paired with Azure IoT Hub, Azure Event Grid MQTT broker, and Microsoft Fabric Real-Time Intelligence.
- While existing Azure IoT Central applications remain supported until March 31, 2027, new edge-to-cloud deployments use the 'Microsoft.IoTOperations' ARM Resource Provider, Azure Arc-enabled Kubernetes clusters, and the 'az iot ops' CLI extension.
