Azure HPC Cache Azure Managed Lustre
Legacy names Azure HPC Cache, Avere vFXT for Azure
Fully managed parallel Lustre file system with native Azure Blob Storage hierarchical storage management (HSM) and AKS CSI integration for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI workloads.
Naming timeline
- Avere vFXT for Azure
Introduced on Azure in August 2018 following Microsoft's acquisition of Avere Systems to provide virtualized NAS edge caching for HPC rendering and compute.
- Azure HPC Cache
Reached general availability in April 2020 as a first-party managed file caching service under Microsoft.StorageCache/caches (retired September 30, 2025).
- Azure Managed LustreCurrent name
Launched in general availability in July 2023 on Microsoft.StorageCache/amlFilesystems and replaced Azure HPC Cache upon its September 30, 2025 retirement.
What replaced Azure HPC Cache?
Azure HPC Cache has been superseded by Azure Managed Lustre, with the latest change on 11 July 2023 (General Availability & HPC Cache Retirement Path). Earlier names covered by this entry also include Avere vFXT for Azure. Fully managed parallel Lustre file system with native Azure Blob Storage hierarchical storage management (HSM) and AKS CSI integration for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI workloads. The underlying legacy API or CLI surface is deprecated, so a technical migration is required.
Also known as
- Azure Managed Lustre File System
- AMLFS
Technical identifiers
Legacy identifiers deprecated. The underlying API or CLI surface for the legacy name is officially deprecated, so this change requires a technical migration rather than a label update.

While sharing the Microsoft.StorageCache ARM provider namespace, the legacy Microsoft.StorageCache/caches resource type, az hpc-cache CLI, and azurerm_hpc_cache Terraform resource retired on September 30, 2025 in favor of Microsoft.StorageCache/amlFilesystems, az amlfs, and azurerm_managed_lustre_file_system.
Notes & disambiguation
- Following Microsoft's acquisition of Avere Systems in January 2018, Microsoft offered Avere vFXT for Azure and launched the managed Azure HPC Cache service (`Microsoft.StorageCache/caches`, `az hpc-cache`, `azurerm_hpc_cache`) in general availability in April 2020 to cache NAS and Blob data for compute clusters.
- In July 2023, Microsoft launched Azure Managed Lustre in general availability as a high-throughput parallel file system with built-in Azure Blob Storage import/export synchronization (`Microsoft.StorageCache/amlFilesystems`).
- On September 30, 2025, Microsoft officially retired Azure HPC Cache, directing HPC and AI file caching workloads to Azure Managed Lustre (`az amlfs`, `azurerm_managed_lustre_file_system`) or Azure NetApp Files.
