Naming timeline

  1. Amazon Timestream

    · General Availability

    Announced in preview at re:Invent 2018 (Nov 28, 2018) and reached GA on September 30, 2020 as a serverless purpose-built time-series database.

    · Umbrella Split & Engine Launch

Launched managed Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB alongside the renamed serverless engine Amazon Timestream for LiveAnalytics (closed to new customers on June 20, 2025).

What happened to Amazon Timestream?

Amazon Timestream was split up, and this part of it is now Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB & Timestream for LiveAnalytics, with the latest change on 14 March 2024 (Umbrella Split & Engine Launch). Managed time-series database portfolio comprising open-source InfluxDB instances and clusters (Timestream for InfluxDB) and the original serverless engine (Timestream for LiveAnalytics). Only the customer-facing name changed; the underlying technical identifiers remain backward compatible.

Also known as

  • Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB
  • Amazon Timestream for LiveAnalytics

Technical identifiers

Technical identifiers unchanged. Only the customer-facing product name changed; the APIs, CLI commands, IAM roles and Terraform resources below keep their legacy identifiers for backward compatibility.

Timestream for InfluxDB uses timestream-influxdb APIs and aws_timestreaminfluxdb_* Terraform resources; Timestream for LiveAnalytics retains timestream-write and timestream-query APIs for existing accounts.

Notes & disambiguation

  • On March 14, 2024, AWS launched Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB and renamed the original serverless Amazon Timestream engine (GA September 30, 2020) to Amazon Timestream for LiveAnalytics under the shared Amazon Timestream umbrella.
  • Effective June 20, 2025, AWS closed Amazon Timestream for LiveAnalytics to new customer accounts (while continuing to support existing active payer accounts) and recommends Amazon Timestream for InfluxDB (supporting InfluxDB 2.x and InfluxDB 3) for new time-series workloads.
  • Each engine uses separate technical primitives: Timestream for LiveAnalytics uses timestream-write and timestream-query APIs (aws_timestreamwrite_database, aws_timestreamwrite_table), whereas Timestream for InfluxDB uses the timestream-influxdb API (aws timestream-influxdb, aws_timestreaminfluxdb_db_instance, aws_timestreaminfluxdb_db_cluster).
